IMPROVING
READING ABILITY USING STUDENT TEAM ACHIEVEMENT DIVISIONS (STAD) AT THE 8TH
YEAR OF SMP NEGERI 3 COLOMADU IN 2010/2011 ACADEMIC YEAR
A. Background
of Study
Learning English involves the four kinds of language
skills: listening, reading, writing, and reading. Teacher should develop these
four language skills in order that their student could use the skill to
communicate with other people and use any expression in speaking.
One of skill that we learn is reading, reading is
one of the complex ways in learning English. The teachers usually provide the
students with a reading selection and a number of questions dealing with the
text to answer. Such procedure in a reading class will not help the students to
develop their reading skill. It just focuses on the text. So, the student will
not explore their knowledge. They cannot make a text in the same type and
cannot read with the correct pronunciation
SMP Negeri 3 Colomadu is one of favorite school in
Colomadu. The achievement of this school makes it be the national standardized
school. The English teaching in this school has been supported by some complete
multimedia, language laboratory, and library and so on. Although this is a
favorite school but it still has problem especially in reading activity. Based
on the observation in SMP negeri 3 Colomadu, the problem arises related to
reading class that is the students have difficulties in correct pronunciation
and understanding the text. Most students do not know how to pronoun correctly.
They will be confused if the teacher gave a text then the teacher asked them to
read the text or gave question about the text.
There are many factors that influence the student’s
ability in their reading. One of them is about their economic status. The class
consists of many statuses, there are high, borguise and low level status. From
the questionnaires that given in VIIIF, the writer conclude that the average
student in high level status has a higher ability in their reading ability than
the borguise level status. And the student in borguise level status has a
higher ability in their reading than the low level status.
From the explanation the writer will specify the
research especially teaching reading by using STAD. Using that method, the
teacher hopes to be able to motivate the students and the writer is interesting in doing a research about “Improving reading
ability using student team achievement divisions (STAD) at the 8th
year of SMP Negeri 3 Colomadu in 2010/2011 academic year”
B. Limitation
of the Research
In
this research, the writer limits the study in teaching learning process of the
student reading class by using STAD method at the 8th year student
in SMP negeri 3 Colomadu.
C. Problem
Statement
Based
on the background of the study, the writer formulate the problem as follows,
1. How
the implementation of teaching using STAD to the 8th year student in
SMP N 3 Coomadu?
2. Can
student team achievement Division (STAD) increase the student’s reading ability
at the 8th year students in SMP Negeri 3 colomadu?
D. Objective
of the Study
Based
on the research problem, the writer has some objective as follows:
1. In
general, this study is intended to improve the student’s reading skills using
STAD
2. To
describe the implementation of teaching reading using STAD to the 8th
year student in SMP Negeri 3 Colomadu.
3. To
find whether r not Student Team Achievement Division (STAD) can increase the
student’s reading ability.
E. Benefit
of the Study
In
this research, there are two kinds of benefits, they are:
1. Theoretical
benefit.
a.
The result of the research can be used as an input
in English teaching learning process especially in teaching reading.
b.
The result of this research can be used as the
reference for those who want to conduct research in English teaching learning
process.
2. Practical
benefit.
a.
The result will help the teacher in increasing the
students reading ability
b.
The result can help the students in increasing their
ability in reading skill.
F. Underlying
Theory
- Previous Study
In
this research, the writer summarizes the relevant previous researches to prove
the originality of the research. The first research has been conducted by Rini
Susiati (2007), “A study on improving reading comprehension using Student Team
Achievement Division (STAD) to the first year student of SMA Muhammadiyah 2
Surakarta in 2006/2007 Academic Year” she found that teaching reading raises
motivation to read, to study reading and student’s reading achievement.
The
second research was done by Anton (2009) in “Increasing Students English
Vocabulay Using Student Team Achievement Division (STAD) at the second year of
Senior high school Al-Islam 1 Surakarta” from the research, he gets conclusion,
there is growth on the student’s vocabulary using STAD method.
In
this case the writer studied “Improving reading ability using student team
achievement divisions (STAD) at the 8th year of SMP Negeri 3
Colomadu in 2010/2011 academic year” this study is different from the previous
study above. From the first and second study, the differences are about the
technique and the object. But, the similar is about method that was used by the
writer.
- Theory Description
The
reading activity needs a process by which people comprehend what they read. Those
processes happen when they face written symbol. They look at them trough their
eyes then their mind will process them. Reading is an ability of cognitive
process of interaction between the graphic symbols and the language skills of
reader.
According
to Grand (1991: 79) the aims of using a reading text at intermediate level and
advance level are:
1. To
teach basic reading comprehension skill
2. To
teach real-life reading skill such as reading for gist and reading for
information.
3. To
develop flexible reading skill, varied according to purpose
4. Develop
critical reading skill
5. To
develop the student’s knowledge of vocabulary or idiom
6. T
reinforce certain grammatical features
7. To
act as stimulus for oral or write work later on
- Research Framework
STAD
can help the student’s reading ability. The type of those methods emphasize the
student’s pronunciation and understanding in reading class. The teacher just helps
and controls the students in providing the materials, materials, arranging the
team, and controlling the group work. Consequently, the students should study
hard and cooperate in their team.
- Action Hypothesis
Based
on the theoretical background, STAD can improve the student’s reading ability
in learning ability in learning English at the 8th year student in
SMP Negeri 3 Colomadu.
